Do you know why it is called a hygrometer? It comes from the Greek word “hydros” (meaning water) and “metron” (meaning measure). A hygrometer is an instrument used to measure the humidity in a room or in the air.

I got my first one when I got my electric guitar. I didn’t know anything about them, but I knew I had to protect my guitar from the humidity changes that happen during the winter. This is why I started to learn more about them and how to use them.

Humidity is a very important factor in the quality of your home. Not only does it affect your health, but it also affects the quality and durability of your furniture, carpets, and other household items.

But what’s the best way to do it? How can you make sure that your home is comfortable? What is the best way to measure the humidity in your home? And is there anything else you should be looking for? We’ve researched and compiled a list of the 10 best hygrometers available today, so you can make an informed decision when you’re buying one.

In this article, I will share some tips on how to choose a hygrometer for your needs and present some of my choices that are worth having a closer look at.

What Are Hygrometers Used For?

If you have been to the pharmacy, you have seen them before. Usually, they are placed right at the entrance so that people can see how much humidity is in the air. But hygrometers are useful for a great variety of applications.

1) Place inside instrument cases – Be it a guitar or any other stringed instrument, or maybe even a wind instrument, the most important thing for you is to make sure that your instruments are safe. The last thing you want is for your favorite guitar to get damaged because of the humidity changes. This is why I got my first one, but the list continues.

2) Install inside greenhouses – Did you know that sometimes the humidity inside greenhouses can reach extremely high levels? This can ruin your crop.

3) Install inside cigar humidors – Keeping your cigars in their best conditions is essential if you want to enjoy them as they should be enjoyed. The right humidity levels can get very difficult to maintain. If you get a hygrometer, you will be able to monitor the levels and make sure that everything remains in order.

4) Terrariums – If you are planning to make a terrarium, it is essential that you make sure that they remain humid. It is often overlooked, but with the right hygrometer, this won’t be a problem at all.

5) Home use – If you are living in an area where the humidity is pretty high, it can affect your home. This means that the wood could start to peel and expand, and you will see molds everywhere.

But the list doesn’t stop here! People used hygrometers outdoors as well to monitor weather! You can check the humidity and know whether there will be rain on your picnic or if it will be dry enough to start a fire outside. Getting accurate readings can help you monitor your wine collection or food storage space. The applications are endless.

There are dozens of models out there, but not all of them will provide you with the information that you need. There are many factors that can influence your decision!

This is a great addition to any greenhouse because you can track the environmental conditions of your greenhouse on a daily basis. It’s a must-have product for anyone who’s interested in the temperature and humidity of their greenhouse, because it allows them to track these two factors on a daily basis.

The ThermoPro TP63B is one of the best hygrometers you can get. It’s accurate, versatile, and has a built-in hanger for easy mounting. This model is sealed waterproof, so you can use it all year round and it won’t need to be mounted on a wall. In order to monitor humidity levels, the TP63A has a built-in sensor that’s accurate up to ±3% RH.

This model comes with a rechargeable battery that’s perfect for use in snowy areas. This indoor outdoor hygrometer works up to 200 feet/60m range, so you can monitor the weather conditions up to 5 rooms at once. The range is reduced by interference from electrical appliances, but if you get the right placement, the signal will still be strong enough for you to read the readings.

It has a rechargeable battery that’s good for up to 90 days of use, so you don’t have to worry about running out of power. You can sync this indoor outdoor thermometer hygrometer with remote sensors, which means you can track the weather conditions in additional locations at once. I like how the remote sensor can be placed near the base station, which means that you can track the temperature and humidity of your greenhouse from anywhere.

Home Many Types of Hygrometers Are There?

Well, the most common ones you’ll find are mechanical and electrical hygrometers, but there are other types out there too.

Electrical Hygrometers are more accurate than the basic scales. They show you exactly what level of humidity there is, and they also come with some sort of alarm output if this goes above or below certain limits. They are more expensive than mechanical devices but on average, they will provide you with better reading. The main disadvantage here is that these models require batteries to operate.

Mechanical Hygrometer – this is the one I got for my guitar, and it works great! You can place these inside your case or anything else that you want to monitor the humidity of, but they are usually used outside of houses to check weather conditions. This is an affordable choice as it doesn’t require batteries, and it works great.

Psychrometers are more specific instruments. These ones measure the humidity and temperature simultaneously, but they can be a bit on the expensive side.

Last but not least Dew Point Hygrometers are used to monitor dew point. This is extremely important for commercial applications where at certain points, the humidity can become very high and this will cause damage. The dew point tells you this level. If it gets too high, all your electronics can become damaged as well as other types of equipment.

Should You Invest In A Digital or Analog Hygrometer?

Choosing the right hygrometer can be tricky! You need to think about what kind of application you need and then go from there. It will take a bit of research on your part, but if you know what you are looking for, it shouldn’t be too hard to find the right one.

For most applications, electrical/digital models are more than capable of providing you with accurate readings. Mechanical/analog options can be more affordable and have a unique look, that many users prefer. Both of them will give you accurate readings. So, what is the difference?

An analog hygrometer consists of a hair mechanism that moves when the humidity changes. An analog hygrometer is just like a clock where you have to look at the hands spinning around to know what time it is. You can see it moving on its own and the hands rotating.

A digital hygrometer does all its work hidden behind a screen. You get an accurate reading, and you can also do some more complex tasks with it. Keep in mind though, it is not always easy to read it in different conditions, and you will have to get used to it first.

Both of them come with their upsides and downsides. These are the most notable:

Analog hygrometers

  • they don’t need electricity to operate
  • they give you a classic look that can fit any place and any interior
  • they are more affordable

Digital hygrometers

  • they are more accurate
  • they give you the ability to set reminders for yourself
  • they also allow you to store readings and see how the humidity changed over time

Things To Consider When Buying a Hygrometer:

Operating Range

The operating range of any device is the minimum and maximum temperature at which the device will operate correctly. The operating range is very important when purchasing a hygrometer, as the device should be able to sense changes in humidity within a wide range of temperatures. For example, a hygrometer that senses humidity from -30°F/-35°C can be used to accurately measure the humidity in your home even in extreme temperatures.

Additional Humidity Sensors / Remote Monitoring

Many hygrometers come with one or more additional humidity sensors, such as those that measure humidity in the basement, the attic, and the crawlspace.

Most hygrometers come with either an AC or DC power source, so you’ll need to decide whether you want to plug it in or use batteries. For example, hygrometers with an AC power source will run continuously while those with a battery backup will turn off when they’re not being used.

Power Source

This is a very important factor because if you get a battery-operated hygrometer, you have to constantly change the batteries. These only last for around 6 months so it’s not fun having to take your equipment apart every few weeks just to replace the batteries.

There are other options though, and they can save you a lot of hassle! Plenty of models come with either an AC or DC power source, so you’ll need to decide whether you want to plug it in or use batteries. For example, hygrometers with an AC power source will run continuously while those with a battery backup will turn off when they’re not being used.

Reading Accuracy

There are several different types of hygrometers available, from those that work with a single sensor to those that have multiple sensors for more accurate readings.

Your hygrometer should be able to read temperature accurately within 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1°C) and humidity within 1% (15%) for a reading period of at least 10 hours. The device should also be able to record humidity readings for up to 10 days, although we recommend against doing this for longer than two weeks.

It’s worth noting that if you live in a humid climate, it may take more than 10 hours to get the hygrometer to log a reading. For that reason, it’s important to leave the hygrometer in a well-ventilated place for at least 10 hours before taking the reading.

Display

Most digital hygrometers have a display screen that allows you to view your temperature and humidity readings on the device. If yours doesn’t have a display, you can use a smartphone or tablet as an alternative.

The display on a hygrometer can be quite large, so it’s important to make sure that it will fit on the place your plant to install it. It should also be able to read all numbers accurately, as this will make it easier for you to interpret them.

One of the most important aspects of a hygrometer is the ease of use and user interface. This is something that you’ll be using every day, so it’s vital that it’s easy to use and that it doesn’t have a confusing user interface. Some models may also come with a hygrometer app so you can use your smartphone or tablet as the display.

Data Logging

Most hygrometers are equipped with an internal clock that will record the time at which the reading is taken and when the reading is first logged. It’s also worth noting that some hygrometers will log data automatically.

For example, if you’re sleeping in a humid environment, the device will log a reading every 15 minutes until it reaches a certain humidity threshold. Then it will switch to an hourly log, and then a daily log.

You’ll be using your hygrometer to monitor the air quality around you, so it’s important that it can log its data automatically. It should also be able to record humidity readings in intervals, as well as total readings over a set period of time.

Portability and Mounting Options

Some models are small enough to fit in your handbag, so you can take it anywhere you go. Most people opt for a tabletop option but plenty of hydrometers allow you to mount them on vertical surfaces too.

A typical hygrometer usually has a clip-on mount that allows you to attach it directly to a wall, ceiling, or window. It may also have a tripod mount for mounting on a tripod, pole, or window frame. You may also find models that have a clamp-on mount for mounting directly to a window or wall.

Certification

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed a new standard for measuring indoor air quality. This is referred to as the NIST 1634 Standard, which is being adopted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Hygrometers that are NIST certified will typically be tested according to this standard and can display the test results.

Cost

The type of hygrometer you need will depend on what you want to do with it. Do you want to monitor humidity levels in your home, or just check the ambient conditions around you? Are you looking for a model to install into your cigar humidor? Maybe you got a greenhouse to monitor, or got yourself a terrarium?

The application will determine the size and feature you want to look for, along with your budget. If you have a low budget, then you might not be able to afford a full-featured, connected hygrometer. In this case, you can go with a simple, standalone hygrometer for the price of a cup of coffee. This will give you the information you need, but it will not be able to monitor different locations or provide you with historical data.
