Caulk is a sealant for joints and seams, typically in the form of colorless or white silicone putty. Caulk can be used around bathtubs, showers, sinks, toilets, windows, and doors to create an airtight seal. It’s also used as a waterproofing agent on exterior walls. In these cases, it is usually applied over brickmould to provide a smooth surface that will not crack when caulking fails due to water penetration. A caulking sealant can be permanent or temporary, depending on when it is applied.

We’ve compiled a list of three silicone caulks that we feel surpasses all others and are ideal for your home. These caulks will help you ensure that you get the best results when it comes to caulking.

Why Do You Need To Caulk?

Caulk is a sealant applied over brickmould to provide a smooth surface that will not crack when caulking fails due to water penetration. It can be used for all types of surfaces, both interior, and exterior. It can be permanent or temporary based on the time you apply it.

  • Waterproofs exterior walls.

OSI - Henkel Corporation 1511100 68790 Loctite Polyseamseal Painters Caulk-White, 10 fl. oz, 10 oz

#9
7.4/10Our Score

Last but not least, the Painter's Complete Caulk. This is some of the best paintable caulk I have ever used since it's water-based polyurethane. It is super easy to work with and very stiff as you can see here.

The nozzle locks closed and prevent spillage – which means no wasted product – and each tube comes individually wrapped inside a second packaging to preserve freshness. Another great feature is that it stays fresh for up to one year if the nozzle isn't opened, so you can stock up on this caulk and use it whenever you want without worrying about it drying out before you have had the chance to use it all.

Besides the great build quality, it is also amazing at waterproofing and repairs. There is very little cracking or flaking when dried out, but I would say that this caulk isn't the best for outdoor projects because of how easy it is to wash off with water. It's better used indoors or in situations where it will be mostly dry.

I would say that the Painter's Complete is an absolute must-buy for any DIY'er on a budget or someone looking to save money and time. It's so cheap and easy to use and incredibly effective at waterproofing and filling holes, dents, cracks, and gaps on just about every surface imaginable.

Choosing Your Caulk Type

Caulk comes in a number of different forms!

Silicone Caulks

Silicone caulk is extremely flexible and can easily shrink or expand making it ideal for cracks, gaps, and seams. Silicone caulk is typically waterproof whereas most other types of caulking will absorb water over time which causes them to crack/fail.

Latex Caulk

Latex caulks are commonly used for exterior applications due to their excellent adhesion to metals, brick, stucco, and masonry surfaces. This caulk tends to dry out over time which causes them to fail.

Polyurethane

The only difference between polyurethane caulks and silicone caulk is that polyurethane caulks contain a mildew inhibitor. This means they are great for interior applications such as windows, bathroom tiles, floors, and cabinets. Although polyurethane caulking can last up to 40 years in exterior applications, the mildew inhibitor can cause it to become brittle over time.

Specialty Caulks

These types of caulks will typically be used for corners or joints where you would like an extra sealant. They may also contain keying features that allow them to stick better/seal harder around nails, screws, and other hardware.

Keep in mind:

  • Silicone is more durable and water-resistant. If you are applying caulk into an area that will not typically get wet then you probably want to go with silicone caulk. It is waterproof which means that if you are applying it to the exterior of your home then water should not be able to penetrate. However, if you choose silicone caulk for an area that will get wet you may find that over time it starts peeling off.
  • Silicone doesn’t take paint well, but latex does
  • Silicone caulk last a lot longer than latex, but it’s harder to apply
  • If you are applying the caulk around a tub or shower you are probably better off using latex or PVC-based caulks.
  • The best caulk for siding and trim is a hybrid or polyurethane because it will last twice as long as acrylic latex which is only good for up to a year.
  • The best caulks for kitchens and bathrooms, gutter seals, roofs, concrete, and masonry are solvent-based sealants.
  • The best caulks for painting are also acrylic latex.

Things To Consider When Buying Caulk:

Not all caulks are created equal! They have various levels of adhesion, water resistance, and durability.

What is the difference between a water-based and solvent-based caulk?

Water-based caulks are generally easy to apply, dry quickly, and have paintable properties. On the other hand, solvent-based caulk seals out moisture but takes a while to dry up.

Should you repair or paint rough spots before caulking?

No, you don’t need to repair the area around before caulking. However, make sure that the surface is clean and dry before using caulk on it.

What are the different properties of the exterior, interior, and flexible caulk?

Exterior caulk has a strong adhesive property while flexible caulk has a rubber-like elastic. Interior caulk is used for sealing and filling up joints and spaces in your home.

Why should you use the right caulk for the job?

It is important to use an exterior caulk for sealing cracks in your home’s external walls while all other types of caulks should be used for household tasks like filling up gaps and holes.

What are the things that you should remember when choosing caulking tools?

When choosing caulking tools, you should consider the type of nozzle as well as the size of cartridges and tubes. Always pick a nozzle that is suited for the job at hand.

How can you apply caulk?

If your caulk has a tube, then it’s best to use a caulk gun. This will help you place the right amount of caulk at any given time.

What are the different types of caulks available?

Caulks are available in tubes, cartridges, and syringe packs. There are water-based caulk tubes as well as solvent-based tubes. Each type has its own pros and cons depending on your projects.

What is a good caulk for sealing windows?

Caulks for sealing windows are usually special acrylic-based sealants. Caulk guns will work perfectly for this type of project.

Which packaging Is best?

The best packaging for your caulk will depend on where you are going to use the product. For the exterior, a caulking gun with a removable tip is best. You can also get caulks in cartridge or tube form.

What about color choices?

Caulks are available in a wide range of colors or various hues. Some have pigments that will only show their true color after the caulk dries up which is completely fine!

What about their drying times?

Caulks dry up at different rates. The time depends on the type of caulk you are using as well as where you are applying it. For instance, solvent-based caulks take a long time to dry up while water-based ones should be used only if the job will be completed within 20 minutes or so.

Is It Possible To Fill In Caulks That Have Been There For Too Long?

If you notice that the caulk has been there for too long and has dried out, don’t panic! You can use a utility knife to scrape it off. Once done, you can replace the old caulk with a new one.

What’s the difference between caulk and sealant?

The main difference between caulk and sealants is that sealants have a thicker consistency and are used for bigger projects. Sealants can also be applied to damp surfaces whereas caulk cannot.
